Our Purpose
The purpose of the Beaverdam Youth League, inc. is to provide area youth with
access to organized youth sports activities in Hanover County, Virginia.
Our Objectives
The objectives of the Organization are to promote the ideals
of good sportsmanship and development of a positive self image, through a
program of organized sports activity. The program exists solely for the
enjoyment and instruction of the children involved.
The objectives shall be achieved by promoting, developing,
and providing the opportunity for teams to play organized sports; enforcing
compliance with league rules; and to do other acts incidental to or connected
with the foregoing purpose and the advancement thereof.
Our History and Dreams
The Beaverdam Youth League, Inc. (B.Y.L.) was formed in 1980 by Sam Mattan (the
Ruritan President at the time) and a few others. So many have helped from then
until now, that we prefer not to mention names, for fear of not remembering all.
The league consisted of Baseball only in the beginning. There were 4 teams with
approximately 50 kids total. All games were played at the Beaverdam Ruritan
Park. This 2004 Season makes it 25 years that the B.Y.L. has been providing fun
for the kids in the Beaverdam community and surrounding areas during the summer
months (June, July & August). The B.Y.L. has grown to 14 baseball teams with
over 200 participates (still played at the Beaverdam Ruritan Park). We also have
4 softball teams with 50 kids, and 5 basketball teams with 50 kids.
Beaverdam Youth League, Inc. has a Board of 16 total members
consisting of 10 officer positions and 6 members-at-large. The Youth League
provides Coaches Clinics through the NYSCA (National Youth Sports Coaches
Association) and requires all coaches to take these clinics. Also, B.Y.L.
First-Aid Quick Reference Check-List booklets are provided and given to each
coach for the safety of all involved. This may seem a lot to ask of Volunteers,
but we have the best interest of the children at heart.
The Beaverdam Youth League, Inc. By-Laws states, "The
objectives of the organization are to promote the ideals of good sportsmanship
and development of a positive self image through a program of organized sports
activity. The program exists solely for the enjoyment and instruction of the
children involved."
KIDS FIRST!!! All are treated equally, all receive trophies,
and all kids that sign up by the cut-off date, play.
The B.Y.L. is proud of its' 25 years of service to the
community. The League has been blessed with a great deal of support, dedication,
commitment, and also GROWTH. Due to the continuing growth each season, we are
seeking community support. Our desire is to have land donated to the league in
order for us to build ball fields, indoor basketball court, concession stand,
and restroom facilities to accommodate the growth. The land, if donated, could
be named after its' donor upon request.
Many dedicated people have given years of service to the
league. We feel it is out of the love for the kids in our community, that the
Beaverdam Youth League, Inc. continues to grow.
