A Donut from Mark

In the early morning hours of Wednesday March 10th my dearly loved son, Mark, went to be with the Lord. I found myself very much awake about the same time on Thursday morning. I forced myself to have an image of Mark walking with Jesus and they allowed me to come along. It was a wonderful experience.

Still in deep sadness I found myself awake again on Friday morning about the same time. I recalled the many times that when Mark was dating Katie he would come home about 1 or 2 am with a box of assorted donuts and jump up in the middle of the bed with Mildred and I and say “what are you doing asleep… it’s time to party”. Then we would finish off the box of donuts and finally get back to sleep. The first time this happened Mark insisted that I try one of the filled donuts. He said that it was new to him and that it was his favorite. After tasting it I told him that it was Bavarian cream. This was all such a wonderful memory that I asked the Lord if he would allow Mark to come back one more time and set in the middle of our bed with a box of donuts. I believe God answers prayers, but I was also reasonably sure that I wasn’t going to get a visual visit from Mark that night.

The Hampton Inn that Melissa found for us had breakfast in the lobby each morning. Thursday’s breakfast did not include donuts. When I walked by the pastry display on Friday morning there were about a dozen glazed donuts in the case and they just didn’t keep my attention and I chose a bowl of cereal instead. I think Mildred got an omelet and sausage. After thanking the Lord for such a nice place to stay and food on the table, we finished off our first course. Mildred went back to the buffet and got herself one of the glazed donuts. About one minute later I went back up to the pastry display and there were a few glazed donuts, 1 donut with some sprinkles on it, and you guessed it… 1 filled donut. My thought was that they had obviously replenished the case with an assortment and this was just what was left since my first trip. I sat back down next to Mildred and took a bite of the donut and it was filled with the Bavarian Cream. No thoughts crossed my mind until Mildred spoke up and said, “they didn’t have any of those when I went up”. A huge smile came on my face and I quietly thanked Mark for the donut. I had Mildred take a bite and told her that I would share my happiness with her later. Mildred did not know about my prayer. I wrapped up the last bite in a napkin and put it in my pocket. Later that evening Mildred, Katie, and myself went into Nicole’s room where, in tears, I gave Katie the last bite of the donut and shared my prayer with them both.

I thank you Lord for allowing us to have Mark in our lives for 32 years, for allowing him to go with you in a pain free Heaven, and allowing him to answer my prayer.

Mark… I love you son, I look forward to the day that I will be with you again, and thanks for the donut!

Love,

Dad
